The 4 prong hawthorne strainer is used to hold back ice yet let your cocktail flow when using a cocktail shaker. The springs on the strainer help press against your 28 oz shaker tin and lock it into place (you still want to support it with your finger however). Yet it still has enough compression for smaller tins.
